If the bone marrow "factory" breaks down and fails to keep up with the body's needs for the production of healthy blood cells, the result is called bone marrow failure. Aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) are bone marrow failure diseases.

On définit les insuffisances médullaires par un défaut de production des cellules matures myéloïdes qui doivent circuler dans le sang. Cela implique une double conséquence, d'une part un déficit en cellules sanguines provenant de la moelle (globules rouges, polynucléaires et plaquettes), et d'autre part l'absence de signe de régénération, notamment l'absence de réticulocytes (cellules correspondant aux globules rouges jeunes) dans le sang.
